Why TATA nano fail

Vision of Ratan TATA sir behind the Nano project

  • Remove the gap between two wheeler and four wheeler.
  • Ratan TATA wants to launch car/affordable car for middle class families.
  • In the year 2008, Ratan TATA sir announced that their team will launch a car of price 1 lakh. Everyone was excited at that time. And Nano were over booked and prebooking were started.
"Nano had attention seeking potential(power to grab attention), it had value, best price as well as quality was also good but because of this attention seeking potential, Nano brand  marketing were by default not by design, by chance but not by choice."

Why TATA NANO failed?

  • There are 2 lakh cars that are prebooked but because of the violation in Singuar, Bengal. Ratan TATA sir's team had to shift their manufacturing plant from Bengal to Gujarat and because of this shifting procedure, it takes 22 months to deliver 2 lakh cars to customers.
  • Another reason is that fire incident were happened with 3-4 NANO cars(peoples start thinking that Nano is cheap and may be the materials that is used in the product are also of low quality that's why it catches fire) and the marketing team did not created positive rebuttal and the competitors took advantages from this incident.
  • Tata Nano is not suitable for hilly and rural areas.
  • Low engine capacity
  • According to research, more than half population of India didn't like the shape or design of Nano because it is look like an covered autorikhsaw.
  • World's cheapest car tag on Nano -  This problem can be resolved if Ratan TATA sir launch Nano in another country and create a high-figh image.
  • Unreliable- In 2014, when ADAC tested crash test of NANO, then NANO scores 0 that means Nano had not even safety features.
  •  Nano have two cylinder petrol engine that creates noise like tempo after usage of two-three times.

SWOT analysis of Nano
  • Strength - Best price, quality
  • Weakness- Cheapest tag, light weight, not suitable for hilly & rural areas.
  • Opportunities- Average of 22 km/hr, Available in three different models-
  1. TATA Nano standard
  2. TATA Nano CX(Deluxe)
  3. TATA Nano LX(Luxury)
  • Threat- People prefer second hand alto, bikes than Nano.
